This year Elemental Excelerator celebrated Earth Day by galvanizing action to design a clean, resilient, and equitable future for the planet we call home. We did two things:
Released an independent, peer-reviewed, quantitative analysis: Transcending Oil. We know not everyone wants to read a dense report, so we partnered with Polygraph (the guys and gals from The Pudding) to turn it into an interactive visual story. The report we commissioned by Rhodium Group shows how the economic growth of Hawaii, can be decoupled from carbon emissions faster than we originally thought. Hawaii is currently mandated to source 40% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2030. This new data says we can get up to 84% by 2030 and that accelerating the shift to clean energy will cost less and generate more jobs for the state.
Brought our community together at the Earth Day Energy Summit to determine how we can move forward together – We put together a short film, called The Earthshot, and we ask your help in sharing it with your friends, family, and social media acquaintances. Why? Transitioning to clean energy is not only a challenge facing utilities and those in the energy industry. It will require collective action from all of us, from entrepreneurs to teachers, from voters to legislators, from Hawaii to each jurisdiction across the world. As Dawn, CEO of Elemental Excelerator, says in the video, “If we delay, it delays all of us together.”

What’s happened since Earth Day?
On April 24, Governor David Ige signed a performance-based ratemaking bill that has the potential to unlock accelerated growth for Hawaii’s clean energy transition. This bill supports regulators in aligning utilities’ financial incentives with Hawaii’s clean energy achievements, which is also one of the key recommendations in Transcending Oil.
